ABOUT US

TEATRO SÓ is a cultural association based in Odemira, Portugal, and Berlin, Germany, that develops multidisciplinary artistic creation, promoting street arts locally, nationally, and internationally.

The relationship with the street as a public space is an inseparable mark in our artistic practice, which is situated at the intersection of the performing, visual and sound arts, as a place of thought and research in a continuous aesthetic and political action.

We understand the street space as a place of the commons; it is in this place where we want to be and intervene, between the practice of imagining and inhabiting spaces of dialogue and encounter.

HISTORY

In 2012, we began our artistic work in Berlin (Germany), where we developed productions based on the relationship between mask work, physical theater, circus arts, and visual arts. All these elements come together to create a visual, silent, and visually poetic form of theater, in which communication between artists and audience is conveyed through the power of gesture. Following this approach, we have created several performative shows that have since toured various countries in Europe and, more recently, South America and Asia.

In 2025, we took Odemira region, in Portugal, as a privileged local context for the development of a set of artistic practices in the domaines of creation, programming, mediation, and training, which allow us to extend the boundaries of the concept of “place” and the possibilities of its occupation. A rural territory that we have brought to the forefront within the context of contemporary arts.

More recently, we have expanded our creative projects, the core of our activity, by exploring different modes of artistic practices to bring together various disciplines converging to give shape to the Street Arts.

A performative dimension that follows the creative approach of Teatro Só, creating theater pieces for public spaces without a script, utilizing the circus technique of stilts, mask work, and large-scale set designs.

A site-specific expository dimension for the street context, involving the construction of artistic objects that bring together sound art, visual art, and multimedia, creating intersections with the material and immaterial characteristics of each intervention site.

A community-based dimension in the development of artistic creation projects that actively involve specific communities in different regions of the country

Therefore, we seek to create different constellations and trajectories of utopian experience of the “place,” in its multiple dimensions. We aim to understand where the boundaries lie between the visible and the invisible in the collective experiences proposed for a given “place.” We want to extend the potential for transforming the “places” occupied by the project, in their physical and symbolic dimensions, and in the construction of individual and collective memories.
